An old interview we did with Wang Chuen Tz, who’s a wonderful illustrator from Taiwan and one of our favorites.

Can you describe one typical day in your life?

After waking up in the afternoon, I would feed our pets, eat lunch with my husband, and then we’d separate for work. When I’m free, I would read or listen to music, play with our cats or cook. Sometimes, in the evenings, our friends would come by for dinner and we would talk and drink. When the weather is good, we would stroll in the mountains, cycle or suntan at our balcony.

中午起床，餵過家裡的小動物們後，和先生一起吃午餐，喝咖啡聊完天，便各自去工作了。 空閒時會邊聽音樂邊看書，逗逗家裡的貓，或做料理。傍晚常有朋友會來找我們吃飯、聊天、喝點酒。天氣好時我們會去山裡散步、騎腳踏車或在陽台晒太陽。

Where do you get your inspiration from? How is your creative process like?

I get my inspiration from everyday life. I have always felt that illustrating has alot to do with one’s personality and character, and all these come from our daily experiences, the books we read, the music we listen to and our friends.

In the process of creating, I spend alot of time preparing and thinking (this takes up a huge part of the actual creative process). I’d laze around with a book or listen to music while I test out the different possibilities and ideas in my head. When I actually start illustrating, things would be a little different from what I imagined. I adjust things as i go along, not knowing how the eventual piece will turn out until I stop drawing. the process is both frustrating and interesting.

從日常生活，我一直覺得畫畫和個性、人格特質有很大的關係，這些養成來自日常生活的經驗、閱讀的書、電影、音樂或朋友。

創作的過程我會花很多時間蘊量，思考佔實際工作的時間很長。會一邊閒晃看書或聽音樂，一邊在腦子裡試想很多可能的樣子。下筆進行時，通常會和想像有落差，一面進行一面調整，不到最後不知道完成的樣子，過程既苦惱也有趣。

How did you decide to become a freelance illustrator? Did you plan it or was it more of an accident?

I have always imagined the perfect life as working from home, where i can arrange my own time. After working in (Taiwan design company) Booday for three years, I quit my job in 2007, took out all my savings and traveled to Europe alone. When I came back to taiwan, I wanted to see if I could make a living doing freelance work. Fortunately, the work didn’t stop coming.

一直對生活的想像是不上班在家工作，自由安排自己的時間。在蘑菇愉快的工作了三年，07年春天辭去工作後，把存款全拿去歐洲一個人旅行，回來便想試試看可不可以靠自己接案子維持生活，很幸運的陸續有案子到現在。

Can you share with us what you’re busy with right now?

I am currently working on a new book.

正在做一本自己的新書。

What are your future plans? What do you dream for the future?

I hope I can keep coming up with work that I am satisfied with, and also complete my personal website (which I have been procrastinating on for a long time).

希望可以持續做出令自己滿意的好作品，然後把拖了很久一直要做的個人網站完成。

I love it when cafes are done up nicely. And I have since discovered that there are a million ways to decorate a cafe. Because, run by different owners, every cafe is unique. We go to each one, pushing open the door, and we enter a new life, a new heart.
